Joy took a long gulp of her lemonade and then shifted in her chair to face Andi. “I’m not sure how to ask this without being nosy, but I’m wondering how Zeke and his dad are doing these days.”
A warning bell went off in Andi’s head.
“They seem fine. The boat wasn’t part of any plan. It just showed up one day,” Andi explained, adding the story about settling the debt. She shrugged in a humorous way. “And the next day, I wandered by and asked Zeke what he’d charge me to live on it.”
Joy laughed along with her, but then her face quickly turned serious. “I guess I’ve always had a soft spot for Zeke. It’s been just him and his dad for almost as long as I can remember.”
Almost? “Uh, then you knew Zeke’s mother before she died?”
“No, I didn't know her, but Zeke and I went to school together. I was a year behind him.”
Had they been childhood sweethearts? Maybe so, but Andi thought better of asking right out. “It’s not easy for a young boy to lose his mother,” she said as noncommittally as possible. “It’s got to be such a painful loss to get past.”
Joy opened her mouth to say something, but then apparently changed her mind. Not until the girls left the yard and took off for Florey’s bedroom did she pick up the conversation.
“I’m probably speaking out of turn,” Joy said, grimacing, “but I had a peculiar kind of bond with Zeke because of his mother.”
“Oh?” Andi’s heart pounded as she waited for the information. She was impatient for it, whether she’d like what she learned or not.
“My mom was a teacher, too,” Joy said. “One afternoon I was waiting outside for her after school. Zeke was there, too. I remember how he was kicking a stone around the gravel schoolyard while he waited for his mom to pick him up.”
Call it intuition or simply picking up Joy’s somber tone, but Andi began to feel a little queasy. “This story ends badly, doesn’t it, Joy?”

“Yes.” Joy paused, but Andi didn’t fill the silence.
